Marriage Licenses

Applicants for Marriage Licenses must:

provide certified copies of birth certificates for both parties.

if either party has been divorced and is applying for a marriage license -

  • within 30 days from the date of the divorce, a copy of the judgment of divorce must be provided with the application, 
  • more than 30 days after the date of the divorce, the month and year of the divorce must be provided, but an actual copy of the judgment is unnecessary. 
if either party is a widow or widower and is applying for a marriage license -
  • within 30 days of the death of a spouse, a certified copy of the death certificate must be provided with the application,
  • more than 30 days after the death of a spouse, the month and the year of the death must be provided, but an actual copy of the death certificate is unnecessary.
be at least 18 years old in order to purchase a marriage license without parental or court intervention. 

If either party to the marriage is 16 or 17, the consent signatures 

  • of both parents of that party or
  • of the tutor of that party or
  • of the court-awarded custodian of that party
    are required in order to obtain a license. 

If either party is under the age of 16, a court order signed by a judge exercising juvenile jurisdiction in the minor's parish of residence is also required in order to obtain a license.

Licenses must be purchased at least 72 hours in advance of the marriage ceremony.

A Marriage License expires 30 days from the date of issue.

The fee is $31.00 payable in cash only. A license for a Covenant Marriage is $36.00 payable in cash only.

Birth Certificate information may be found at the Louisiana Vital Records Registry website. You may view a complete list of vital records registry information packets by clicking here or by following the link on the Vital Records Registry home page. You may order either long-form birth certificates or short-form "birth cards" online directly from the Vital Records Registry by clicking here.

You may also obtain birth certificate information by contacting the Baton Rouge or the New Orleans office of Louisiana Vital Records at the addresses below or by visiting any of the Vital Records "walk-in" offices located around the state. Click "Office Addresses" on the menu of the Vital Records Registry website Information Packets page.
